Recap: How to Deliver a Successful Pitch w/ Jeff Draa

On Tuesday March 29 the Entrepreneur Society welcomed Jeff Draa, VP Tech Coast Angels, to campus.  He brought with him insights into what it takes to make a successful pitch to help CSUSM entrepreneurs prep for our upcoming Quick Pitch Competition.  Here’s a brief recap of WATA’s (walk away, take aways) from his presentation.

The only goal of your pitch is to get another meeting

The purpose of your pitch?

  1. To get another meeting.  Your pitch should peak interest and give you a chance to gain a second meeting where you can go over the details of your plan.

What areas should you cover in your pitch? (sequentially)

  1. What problem will you resolve?  (make it a big problem)
  2. What is your solution?
  3. Why are you qualified to solve that problem?  (skills, intellectual property, patent)
  4. What is the market size?  (as big as you can define/justify)(include competition brief if you have time)
  5. Define company milestones and rollout plan (be sure to include break-even point)
  6. Company growth (P&L, year 1..2…3)
  7. Who drives the company?  (board members, key personnel)
  8. Where will the money go?  (terms, details of exit plan)

What do winners do?

  1. Start with BIG problems and get everyone interested early.
  2. Personalize their story.
  3. Practice, practice, and practice until they themselves are sick of their pitch.  Practice helps breed confidence, and confidence shows in the final pitch.
  4. Have backup slides with details for questions that may come up post-pitch.
  5. Focus on what you know and love.
  6. Keep your slides simple.

What should you avoid?

  1. Talking too fast.
  2. Talking about something nobody cares about.
  3. Not being comfortable with the details.
  4. Don’t mislead, if you don’t know…be honest.

Start right NOW!

Welcome to our ES blog

Thank you again to all CSUSM Entrepreneur Society members who attended our latest guest speaker, Steve Cherry (you can check out our Marketing Director’s recap of the event here)….and welcome to our new blog.  We are in the beta stage to see how this blog can add to our E-Society members experience.  We’ll be posting recaps of our events along with other resources to encourage our campus entrepreneurs to stay informed.

Please leave us a comment below to let us know your own WATA’s (walk away, take aways)  from our events or to share feedback on how we can continue to facilitate entrepreneurship at CSU San Marcos.  Feel free to also use the comments to let us know what types of events you’d like to see in the future, resources to utilize on campus, what we can do better, or any other thoughts on how the Entrepreneur Society is doing at CSUSM.

We once again encourage all majors to attend our next Uhour event on March 8, as we welcome patent attorney, Eric Hancsom to campus.  He will be sharing his experienced perspective on how patents, trademarks, and copyrights can help ensure an entrepreneurs success.  Food will be provided for all attendees and we encourage members to rsvp via our facebook event page.  In the meantime…start prepping questions you may have for Eric regarding intellectual property and we will see you soon.

Spring Forward

Thank you once again, to all who attended our first Spring meeting.  It was an honor to have Scott Landow speak with us on entrepreneurship, and we hope he provided some inspiring thoughts to all.  If not, at least you’ll have one less hangover to deal with this weekend thanks to rez.  We will be hosting a few other events this semester including our highly anticipated 2nd Quick Pitch Competition, we encourage all majors and campus entrepreneurs to attend.
